Mosquito Lagoon Florida Report 3/25/07 In category Fly Fishing Written by Capt Chris M During the past two weeks, high winds have made for some tough fishing in east central Florida. A cold front last weekend dropped the temperatures into the 40's but over the past week, they have climbed steadily reaching the 80's this weekend. The rising temperatures have brought even more bait fish to the flats and clear skies the past few days offered some great sight fishing opportunities.
Celis availability... In category Fly Fishing Written by erickatz After the interest shown in threads and via email, I contacted a buddy in the liquor business who got me in contact with Bobby Mason at Michigan Brewing (in Webberville, MI, about an hour or so from Grand Rapids, 1/2 hour from Lansing). I learned that Celis is currently and officially (but see below) distributed in only three states beside Michigan - Texas, Oregon, and Washington, but that it win
TR: The Magic Hour... In category Fly Fishing Written by JUNIOR28 With the Wednesday casting practice session completed, I went home and ate, all the while silently lamenting having to quit on such a sublime fall afternoon/evening. Days like this don't come along every day, and with almost dead calm winds to boot, especially in ND. So, I grabbed the phone after washing supper dishes, and rang my brother to see if he wanted to tilt at bluegill for a while. He i

Cabela's FT fly rod In category Fly Fishing Written by Atterysquash I am looking for a 9 ft 4 wgt fly rod for occasional fishing here in the Colorado/Northern New Mexico/Northern Arizona area. At the Cabela's store their FT (code 904) sure felt great ...but many have said I really need to test with reel and line. I wonder if anyone out there might have some field experience with this particular rod?

More Knot tests In category Fly Fishing Written by lifeboy12 following jarmo I've done some brief tests. Knots tested: clinch, Improved clinch, Orvis, trilene and palomar. Leader 3x rio Power flex. Hook Tiemco 5262 #8 except for the palomar where I couldn't get the doubled line through the hook eye so used a Mustad 36890 #6 Salmon hook. I chose this tippet and hoo(s) as they are typically what I use locally. Method: hooks were tied end to end on tippet o

Micro-Patterns In category Fly Fishing Written by Seanaphish Really, I have to stop flirting with these little things and strike up a serious relationship. The usual rituals have been performed, bought the books, the hooks, tied up tricos and nits, knotted ridiculous lengths of 7X, but after a date or two, the infatuation dies and the dalliance ends. There's not a shred of doubt in my mind that late season fishing on flat water, over fish that have been o
Isabel be damned, we have Cabelas In category Fly Fishing Written by Bacchus For those Coburn-bound types heading up next weekend, there is a Plan B, should we be inundated with water. The Cabela's superstore opens this Thursday outside of Hamburg, PA. It would be a bit of a road trip from Hemlock Acres, but at least we could be dry and warm. We can play with those KPOS rods that Forty likes so much, bond amongst the outdoor gear, and perhaps take a side trip to the nearb

Hurricane Update 2 In category Fly Fishing Written by Egkephalos Cool this morning, in the low 60's. A spritz of rain in the air and light breeze. Beach cams are either off-line or swamped by users. The Old Coast Guard Station cam and the Surf-Shop cam at the beach are wiped out. The Avalon Pier cam soldiers on but under a heavy load slightly more west. This takes the center's path more over C'ville. Although it will certainly wipe out, in Darwinian fash

Mosquito Lagoon Florida Report 12/3/06 In category Fly Fishing Written by Capt Chris M Last week brought the first significant cold front of the season to east central Florida. Following the front, we had temperatures in the 40's and gale force winds. This week we had above average temperatures which reached into the 80's but no break from the high winds. As a result, I have only fished three days in the last two weeks. The weather has been less than pleasant but, on a positive note
Mosquito Lagoon Florida Report 12/15/06 In category Fly Fishing Written by Capt Chris M Poor weather has limited my fishing the past two weeks but when I have been able to get on the water, the fishing has been excellent. The water has continued to drop in the Mosquito Lagoon but has been very clean. Last week, Mark L. from Massachusetts, joined me for a half day of fly fishing the Mosquito Lagoon. The weather was near perfect with the exception of a few clouds. Temperatures were

Mosquito Lagoon Florida Report 1/16/07 In category Fly Fishing Written by Capt Chris M The water levels have dropped in the Mosquito Lagoon but the temperatures have remained well above normal with several days in the 80's. The redfish schools have been plentiful and the black drum have been showing up on occasion. It has been more like fishing in April than January but I never complain when I can fish in shorts during the winter. Last Friday, Paul H. from Orlando, and I hit the

TR: Fishing on a Rainy Day... (long) In category Fly Fishing Written by yemjarvis Had been awhile sense I will been fihsing (too long, actually), so the plan was made Tuesday to take Wednesday (7/9) off & run out to Velva Spotrsman`s Dam & fish more or fewer the whole day. Despite of and when I got home turned on
Mosquito Lagoon Florida Report 2/9/07 In category Fly Fishing Written by Capt Chris M The past two weeks have brought some cold north winds to east central Florida dropping both the water temperature and level. The extreme low water has many of the areas we had been fishing high and dry, Water temps are hovering in the mid 50's and the wind has been a factor on several recent trips. Despite the conditions, the fish has been quite good. Last week, Capt Tom Van Horn and I fished

Mosquito Lagoon Florida Report 2/19/07 In category Fly Fishing Written by Capt Chris M This week ended with some of the coldest weather we have experienced so far this year and before the cold came some of the highest winds of the year. The weather made for some tough fishing conditions but we did catch a few quality fish and did not get shut out during four days of fishing. Monday brought mild temperatures but we faced clouds and rain as I fished with Bob Caruso from Connecticut
Sailfish and Swordfish Biting off Ft. Lauderdale In category Fishing Adventures Written by Capt. Andy Roydhouse Fishing was a bit slow this week. We caught a few larger fish, but not a lot of action. The bigger fish we did catch were pretty cool though. A couple big sharks of various species, including two big hammerheads, a huge bull shark and several nice silky sharks. The Friday night open boat swordfish trip this Friday had to brave some big seas this week. We were the only ones on the water Friday
Mosquito Lagoon Florida Report 2/24/07 In category Fly Fishing Written by Capt Chris M This week was the complete opposite of last with mild temperatures, sunny skies and, for the most part, reasonable winds. The fishing was great and the catching was even better. Tuesday, Tom from Massachusetts and I started on a slick calm morning by stalking a school of big redfish in crystal clear water. We fished them for a couple hours with only a couple bites but, with persistence, Tom was
Mosquito Lagoon Florida Report 3/5/07 In category Fly Fishing Written by Capt Chris M Schools of redfish continue to roam the shallow flats of Mosquito Lagoon. In addition to schools of 20-200 fish, there are plenty of single reds to be found in the same areas. The water level has risen in the past few days and water temperatures are pushing 70 degrees. The fish are active and targeting small crabs and shrimp. If you can get a small soft plastic in front of them, they will eat it.
Mosquito Lagoon Florida Report 3/13/07 In category Fly Fishing Written by Capt Chris M During the past week, we have had some days with spectacular weather along with some days that were less than ideal. The fish, however, have been plentiful. The water still remains low in Mosquito Lagoon and the numbers of mullet present have been increasing each day. Last Wednesday, I was on the water dawn till dusk with two trips. In the morning, I fished with Paul and his son Lee. It was a p

Mosquito Lagoon Florida Report 4/7/07 In category Fly Fishing Written by Capt Chris M The weather the past couple weeks has been up and down with some high winds and some days of no wind. The fishing, like the weather, has been up and down with some great days, and some not so perfect days. The redfish, however are still schooled up and plentiful, The big seatrout have returned to the flats and are beginning to eat. The key to fishing has been to find the schools of mullet. They ha
Mosquito Lagoon Florida Report 4/15/07 In category Fly Fishing Written by Capt Chris M We have continued to experience outstanding fishing for redfish and large seatrout during the past few weeks. On most days, we have encountered multiple schools of redfish along with a significant amount of singles tailing on the flats of Mosquito Lagoon. Seeing redfish does not always equate with catching them, as those who have fished the Lagoon know. Although the fish have been plentiful, and,
200 lb. Swordfish ate by mako on the Catch My Drif In category Fishing Adventures Written by Capt. Andy Roydhouse It's been a while since I've written a report. We had a couple slow weeks when the fishing was mediocre, but it sure has picked up. This past week has been awesome fishing, both offshore and inshore. Our Friday Night open boat swordfishing trip that we run every Friday night had a crazy trip this week. We hooked up to a really nice swordie. Fought him for about 20 minutes before getting him
Mosquito Lagoon Florida Report 4/29/07 In category Fly Fishing Written by Capt Chris M We have been seeing hundreds of redfish on most trips during the past few weeks. The catching, however, has varied. High winds on many trips have made sight casting to these spooky fish difficult. If you can manage to get a lure in front of the fish, they have been eating well. The shallow flats are still holding plenty of schooling fish and there have been plenty of shots at tailing fish througho
Mosquito Lagoon Florida Report 6/8/07 In category Fly Fishing Written by Capt Chris M Summer finally arrived this week in east central Florida. For the first time in nearly three weeks, we have had calm winds and warm temperatures. Hopefully, this weather pattern is here to stay.
