Rarely do we get a chance to ice fish on our end of Superior, but this year has been an exception. Angles are venturing out onto the ice near Duluth Minnesota and are finding the salmon to be cooperative. In fact there have been numerous limit catches of the hungry coho salmon. Small jigs and crappie minnows seem to work best for the salmon, while smelt and large minnows are taking some trout neer

I have dry flied for trout all my life and am now looking to salmon and steelhead fish. I will be fishing around Chico california. Any web sites on salmon and steelhead fishing people can recommend? Any flies to recommend? My heaviest fly poles are a daiwa 6/7, a #1172 golden sabre 6/7, and a daiwa 8 weight. I only have 2 reels, a perine automatic fly reel no 81 and a hardy lightweight lrc.

We have several Mitchell 782 for salmon fishing in NY ...they were discontinued several years ago and are scarse on eBay. The unique feature other than large capacity, is that the rewind handle does NOT spin when a fish streams out the line. We frequently use just mono and put 500 yards of 12 pound Trilene ...peel off 10 yards at a time when it gets scuffed up on rocks.

So far the responses on this board are running at 6 to 1 in favor of debarbing/barbless versus barbed hooks. (I'm not counting the results on braless.) I've been running a similar poll on the FAOL board, wher it is running 8 to 1. Given the sample sizes these differences are not significant, but the preference for no barbs over barbs is.

So far the responses on this board are running at 6 to 1 in favor of debarbing/barbless versus barbed hooks. (I'm not counting the results on braless.) I've been running a similar poll on the FAOL board, wher it is running 8 to 1. Given the sample sizes these differences are not significant, but the preference for no barbs over barbs is.

Leader 3x rio Power flex. Hook Tiemco 5262 #8 except for the palomar where I couldn't get the doubled line through the hook eye so used a Mustad 36890 #6

Winter vacation is approaching (somone said on Roff this week that the academic calendar is nothing if not predictable), and basically I'm a bit homesick and too full of Africa to look forward to a trek in Uganda or another safari in South Africa. So I'm starting to think seriously of charging my batteries with a quick visit to some familiar stomping grounds to see friends and family.
