Four fishing buddies and myself hit Rock Creek about noon on Thursday the
17th. It was a surreal experience pulling up to the camp and finding five fire trucks and a burned out lodge. I've fished in Madison River between West Yellowstone and Madison some weeks ago and I keep a wonderfull remenbrance. Did I was lucky ? Do you think it is one of the best rivers for trouts in west ?
On the Madison, trouts didn't looked my half/dry fly (in duck) but they have been interested by a pheasant tail.
I've also tried the Gibbon River, the Snake River and Cottonwoodcreek in the south of T

No. That's their normal coloration. Some are more colorful than others.
That one was especially colorful, that's why I took the picture. The one's I caught at the last stream I tried, were less colorful (but that could also be because they were so small).

Planned to make this my last drive out West, so in 47 days packed in a lot of fun and fishing.
STATISTICS: The white buffalo (my GMC mini-van) drank $550 worth of fuel.
Trip to NC mountains, Kentucky, Minnesota ( to drop squaw), Montana, back to
Minnesota (to fish and get squaw), back to Wilmington, NC (home) covered
7,922 miles. Drove over Skalkaho Pass, and Low-Lolo Pass, and 12 trips over

I've been catching more my my usual amount of Brookies lately since I've been fishing high altitude streams due to our heat wave. One thing I've noticed is that I have a MUCH higher incidence of deep hooking with the little Brookies than any our type or size of trout and this is on dries.

It happened about 2 hours ago. I was nymphing right near town. On the second cast I hooked a fish, which immediately jumped and I saw it was a typical 10" stocker (presumably) I'd expect to find in this spot. Seriously fished mostly in the canyon waters due to lower temps. Despite that the fishiung was magnificent(except for Rock Creek, the water was like bathwater).

I`m packed and ready to go (more or less) tomorrow morning. Gotta stop in Missoula for supplies, a new flyline, and some flies to round out my Rock Creek Clave box. I`ll be at campsite 114 at Elkhorn tomorrow, in time, I hope, for some evening fishing.
