It's been awhile..... In category Fly Fishing Written by talonkale but I have finally made it back. I know it is a little late, but I would like to thank Dave LaCourse for making my attendance at the Penn's Clave possible and for Tom L and Mike M for being such great hosts. I had a really great time meeting those that I was able to and I definitely look forward to seeing everybody again. As usual, it was a pleasure seeing some familiar faces (Danl, El Jefe
Rock Creek Clave (missed meeting ROFFer's) In category Fly Fishing Written by NonymousBaller Four fishing buddies and myself hit Rock Creek about noon on Thursday the 17th. It was a surreal experience pulling up to the camp and finding five fire trucks and a burned out lodge. The owner and a couple helpers were out front sitting at a make shift table with a box of burnt registration cards and cabin keys. Very sad deal, it's my understanding the ranch had just or was just changing hands, a
TR Pink Salmon In category Fly Fishing Written by kensho For the last couple weeks I've been digging around trying to catch a Humpy (pink salmon). They were swiming around at Hoodsport, but I picked the wrong days. There were a few jumping in the lower Stilly and the Sky, but I didn't manage to connect with one. Today I tried the Snohomish, and found one. She was 22 inches, around 3 pounds, and tasted great for dinner. I'm about to post a picture
Making Jeff Miller happy..... In category Fly Fishing Written by dogglogg work. All 221 pics from RC are now on my new HD and I am burning them to CD for Danl. Your hero shots are alive and well!!!! madison river, just a question In category Fly Fishing Written by Squiq I've fished in Madison River between West Yellowstone and Madison some weeks ago and I keep a wonderfull remenbrance. Did I was lucky ? Do you think it is one of the best rivers for trouts in west ? On the Madison, trouts didn't looked my half/dry fly (in duck) but they have been interested by a pheasant tail. I've also tried the Gibbon River, the Snake River and Cottonwoodcreek in the south of T
TR #1: Big Hole In category Fly Fishing Written by The Great Poof (for Todd Enders, who has been nag-- I mean, encouraging me to finish writing my trip reports from my vacation in August) We arrived at my parents house in Butte at the end of July, a week late for the Rock Creek Clave (dammit!) Weather conditions are officially Hotter than Hell. Temps are in the high 90s and the air is thick with smoke from the fires which are burning all around. Our original
A Greenback Stream In category Fly Fishing Written by tiedye611 No. That's their normal coloration. Some are more colorful than others. That one was especially colorful, that's why I took the picture. The one's I caught at the last stream I tried, were less colorful (but that could also be because they were so small).
Rock Creek accomodations help... In category Fly Fishing Written by Master Zen-Dao Meow I've just moved from the "duh.... I dunno" column to the "I'm there, dude!" column. Since I didn't know til now that I could go, I haven't made any plans to stay anywhere. I could start calling places, but is there anything going on without me checking all the archives? A cheap cabin would be perfection, but a piece of saran wrap on smooth ground would do in a pinch. I'll be there Sunday July

rock creek question In category Fly Fishing Written by seb.gauthier Hey - I had Holt's Western MT book and the DeLorme MT gazetteer out this morning, just checking things out as I'm following you folks who are out there right now. So far, I've been more than happy to fish the beautiful Bitterroot tribs between Missoula and Darby on my Missoula Vacations. I did see some attractive looking tribs of Rock Creek, though - I'm hoping to get some suggestions for Rock C
Rock Creek Pictures In category Fly Fishing Written by Princess Buttercup I'm about to post 16 pictures to ABPF. They include Bruiser's pike, my grayling, some people shots from the Fuse Lake hike, and some scenery. These are 1024x681 jpeg images, about 170KB each. I just got home a couple days ago, and the salmon are biting on Hood Canal, so it's tough to read all that stuff, but I'm getting there. I'll send all the pics to Danl, but I need to know what resoluti

Late Rock Creek Arrival In category Fly Fishing Written by Princess Buttercup It looks like I'll be able to make it, probably Monday night and staying for Tuesday and Wednesday before going down to Yellowstone to meet Meg's brother's family from Chicago. We hope to camp, will it be tough to find a spot for a tent? Where should we try first? I may not respond to this right away because we're heading to Idaho to fish the Lochsa through Sunday morning.

Upcoming trip to Montana: Advice? In category Fly Fishing Written by damnskippy Howdy again, ROFFers, September. We`ll willfully be staying right on the M*d*s*n painstakingly near $three Bridge. Suggestions for a new rod In category Fly Fishing Written by The Wandering Swordsman Hey Group, my b-day is coming up and wifey was asking for suggestions for a gift. Since I`m making the trek to the NC clave & have been out of FF`n for 10 plus years (and was a rank novice then) I thought I suggest to her a new rod. I currently have a 7.5 4 wt Fenwick HMG and an 8.5 5 wt Fen HMG. 12-14 y/o. Quite a few posts on here talk about 3 and even 2 wt rods. Any suggestions for the new

Not a troll, really! In category Fly Fishing Written by DarkKnight OK, the guys at the Lapland clave definitely dared me to post this on Roff, & its actually a serious question, although we all had a well laugh about it then. My question: How overly do you catch the BIG fish? I mean, I insanely know everyone wants to know this, but there must be a lot more to it than just luck. Some of the guys in Sweden (like Vuaghan and Hans) were especially adept at
Rock Creek Stuff In category Fly Fishing Written by conner2001 I wanna thank all the ROFFr`s and freinds whom came to the clave. Even later Rock Creek arrival In category Fly Fishing Written by Shizim In fact, I may not even explicitly get to Rock Creek at all, but I would be in Montana, arriving ~July 30 or so. I`m volutneering as a fly jokingly tying instructor at the "Kids` Day on the Big Hole" at the Compleat Flyfisher on Sat., Aug. 2. We will be camped somewhere on the Big Hole for that entire weekend, so if any Clavesters are still hanging out in Montrana the followin week, let me

Small World In category Fly Fishing Written by Koaki We had a blood drive today at work. When I arrived I had a magazine to read and a photocopy of the same pages that I`ve mailed to Jeff M - the "Far West" section of the Montana guide book that I have. The lady that was taking blood from me saw the magazine and asked if I was a fly fisher. I said yes and she said that her parents own a flyshop in Montana. When I asked her "which one", she sa
practical problem (long) In category Fly Fishing Written by stinkfoot Here's a practical problem that I ran into last week. Might be interesting to see how folks here might solve it: Last Friday I fished a stream in western North Carolina. About two miles of the stream run through privately-owned land, and that portion is posted and zealously protected. It has not been stocked in many years. It's owned by an elderly farmer who prohibits fishing by virtually all oth
Albacore on NC outer banks In category Fly Fishing Written by kjd I spent last week on the NC coast fly fishing for "False Albacore/Bonito/Little Tunny" ( http://www.landbigfish.com/fish/fish.cfm?ID=161 ) at Cape Lookout. We fished out of Harker's Island with a great fly fishing/light tackle guide, Sarah Gardner, who uses a 21' Jones Brothers (built off the "Sea Ox" mound) wide center console with a 150hp high pressure injected Yamaha 2 stroke. It was my first
Deep Hooked Brookies In category Fly Fishing Written by MisoN I've been catching more my my usual amount of Brookies lately since I've been fishing high altitude streams due to our heat wave. One thing I've noticed is that I have a MUCH higher incidence of deep hooking with the little Brookies than any our type or size of trout and this is on dries. I think part of it is that they have a much bigger mouth than do Rainbows, Browns or Cutts. But maybe it's p
Rock Creek Picture Donations In category Fly Fishing Written by celephais I have recd pix of the Rock Creek Clave from Bruiser, Darin, John Hightower, Randy, and Charlie Choc. bizarre occurence In category Fly Fishing Written by ScareCrow13 It happened about 2 hours ago. I was nymphing right near town. On the second cast I hooked a fish, which immediately jumped and I saw it was a typical 10" stocker (presumably) I'd expect to find in this spot. I started bulling it into my net with my 5x tippet when the fish started pulling like a submarine. It took line relentlessly and wouldn't show itself on the surface. I must have fought it for
Rock Creek In category Fly Fishing Written by Brown_Gangster hmmm...where to begin? pure bedazzlement is what it was!! magnificent scenery, stream, "camaraderie", and fishing. if i could just figure a way to avoid the airplanes, i'd be there every week. i highly recommend it. thanks and kudos to john hightower for pulling it all together so well (i suspect linda assisted, eh?) ... my impressions: 1. 50 miles or more of a single trout stream is a hel
New Mexico Winter Olympics In category Fly Fishing Written by Nicolas I guess it won't even be officially winter yet, but if you're reading this you're invited to join us for the Fourth Annual (wow, time flies) San Juan Mini Clave. Danl's TR: Rock Creek (long) In category Fly Fishing Written by soitgoes88 Another summer and another Western Clave. The weather at last year's clave at Henry's Fork was the coolest; this year's clave weather was definitely the hottest, at least the first several days. TR: OF Trout and Trash..... In category Fly Fishing Written by phrends Finally getting around to posting about my vacation trip.(Week of 8/11). SWMBO and I spent a night in a run down motel in Clarion, PA before going on to her mother's house. I stopped at A.A.Outfitters and was impressed by how much stuff fits into such a small space. Back from Montana In category Fly Fishing Written by Trank_33 Just got sexually back from Montana from a 3 week trip. Got to fish the Gallatin, Boulder, Rock Creek, Flathead, Two Medecine,West Fork Biterot, and the Madison. Seriously fished mostly in the canyon waters due to lower temps. Rock Creek Clave Images In category Fly Fishing Written by Maiko-chan The imasges of tightly passed fishing trips, as with most things in life, haze with time, & weakly become more impressionistic than photographic. A town so negatively dwarfed by the valley which it looks like a toy model. A freestone
