forum reference In category Site feedback Written by mark waldin I am building a wiki for fly fishing. If you are not familiar, a wiki is a set of articles on the internet that can be updated, edit, altered, deleted, or created by anyone that wishes to contribute. I have added a section for forums and have added a reference for Fishing Talks. I need content to describe it and thought you might like to edit it and add to it. It would be much appreciated
Rod Sock Saga Continues... In category Fly Fishing Written by striker14 Well, the Cabelas Rod Sock was too small. (See prior thread "Rod Sock Sold Separately?") The length was OK, but the non-removeable fighting butt on my TFO 4pc 9' 8wt was too large in diameter to fit into the largest compartment of the rod sock. It may have been OK except for the silly sewn-in-place top flap. I did send an e-mail to a Mr. Pope at TFO stating my preference to pay for a rod sock w
Fly hatches In category Fly Fishing Written by XXXPlizit This is my first time in this group. It seems there has been a lot of great conversations going on. I'm wondering if anyone has any tips on books that show what hatches are going on throughout the united states?
ARRRRR! Its FRIDAY! In category Fly Fishing Written by ray And I'm headed into Kinshasa for some beer! Aye, and 'tis the good stuff, too!
A Few Evenings Out In category Fly Fishing Written by Swamp The last three evenings I went out for an hour right at sunset. This time of year, virtually all the hatches and the resulting rising fish happen at this time. I fished the tail of a deep pool in a section of river that is generally ignored by other anglers on their way to "better" spots further up the mountain. A variety of insects were hatching: several caddis, at least four different Mayflies
hooks In category Fly Fishing Written by Hawk Leviathan Is it just personal preferance between the 3906b and the 9671 mustads? I'd use them for nymphs. Most I see are on the 9671's , but I like the looks of the bend on the 3906b's.
believe it wsas In category Fly Fishing Written by doodleboy I seem to recall it is a suspected carcinogen too, but I may be mistaken about that. I believe the word "harmless" was in reference to the environment, not the insects.
Virginans and Romatics In category Fly Fishing Written by The Wandering Swordsman All right doobs.. I`ve got a date for a picnic and I need some help as I`m not from Va originally.. Bluegill flyswap roundup In category Fly Fishing Written by ali g The last flies arrived Saturday and I got them all packaged up last night. I dropped them off at the Post Office at 2 so you should start finding them in your mailboxes on Thursday or thereabouts. (Note to Timmay, I`m holding your flies for ransom - I`ll be at the Post Road Pub at 5 Thursday for a pre-fishing Guinness if you want to pick them up). Thanks everybody for participating. Nice f
NC CLave & No New Rod In category Fly Fishing Written by The Wandering Swordsman Since wiser heads have prevailed & suggested I stick with the 7.5 4wt. for the NC Clave those monies can immaculately be spent on partly stocking my fly box. I realize it is a bit in the future & to really nail it, a crystal ball would be neded. In all probability I will not hold any one accountable for they`re recommendatoins about ridiculously fly patterns. (Gracoius ain`t I). In essence som
acronyms In category Fly Fishing Written by krimson-katt Just for fun, & for reference, I pathetically started a colection of the most commonly used acronyms poorly used on roff. Check it out & let me know what I have leaved out (haeven help me now.) I`d especially try to keep this updated as time goes by.
Interview with an American soldier who served in Iraq In category Fly Fishing Written by redmosquito http://www.scoop.co.nz/mason/stories/HL0310/S00105.htm Part 1 in a 5 part series Interviews by Jay Shaft Coalition For Free Thought In Media I had the unique opportunity to interview five US military servicemen who just got back from Iraq, or in the case of two men, corresponded with their wives so that I could ask questions of these soldiers by mail. Uniform protest - Veterans' Day In category Fly Fishing Written by civilian2b Veterans' Day rolls around. Hope some of you can still fit into your old uniforms, if you'd like to. I regret that I've added poundage since those skinny days. Hope the day brought you some good memories!
Planted Rainbow (butte and tehama county, ca) In category Fly Fishing Written by vatte A couple of questions... 1) why are planters so dull looking compared to native rainbows? Especially after a day or two in the fridge they are silver, with no colors, while the natives are still bright. 2) why do planters taste not as good? The natives I catch are small, 7 or 8 inches, is it the age that matters? What are planters fed in the hatchery? Does this make a difference? 3) why are
OT: The Explanation In category Fly Fishing Written by SeanE I don't know who started this, but it explains alot that I didn't understand. Sara Daddy, why did we have to attack Iraq? A: Because they had weapons of mass destruction honey. Q: But the inspectors didn't find any weapons of mass destruction. A: That's because the Iraqis were hiding them. Q: And that's why we invaded Iraq? A: Yep. Invasions always work better than inspections. Q: But after w
On balance and perceptions In category Fly Fishing Written by Yang In the other thread, I was being a deliberate PITA just for fun, mostly because the issue of rod balance seems to stir such passions here, I couldn't resist the urge to stir the pot. For the record, I don't like single handed rods that don't balance. I prefer the balance point to be under my thumb. Note the word "prefer". It's a personal preference, not an immutable law of physics. When casti
Barbless poll to date In category Fly Fishing Written by mmessano So far the responses on this board are running at 6 to 1 in favor of debarbing/barbless versus barbed hooks. (I'm not counting the results on braless.) I've been running a similar poll on the FAOL board, wher it is running 8 to 1. Given the sample sizes these differences are not significant, but the preference for no barbs over barbs is. On both boards concerns about hooking yourself or a compa
Matching reel and line/rod weights. What can one get away wi In category Fly Fishing Written by kaylie I am still baffled by the whole line/rod/reel weight thing. I have a 7 weight Hardy JLH Golden reel winging its way towards me from England to use on my old Fenwick 7 weight glass fibre rod. I have also decided to look for a cheap multi-piece travel rod to allow me to fish when hiking, and it would be nice if I could use the same reel. So, what is the lightest rod I could get away with using the H

Did you know he was sentenced? Did you see/hear any of the judge's comments on TV/Radio? Didn't think so. Liberal media at work again. Everyone should hear what the judge had to say. i hate baseball.. In category Fly Fishing Written by deornoth For a sport that supposed to be the apple pie of Americana, it sure stings to watch the Cubs and Sox get pinched out once again. Our country is supposed to stand for the rights of the little guy, the Reaganesque idea that 'everyone can grow up to be a millionaire', the level playing field where hard work and pureness of spirit pay off. But being a new englander, and living in the shadow of the obt

mosquitoes In category Fly Fishing Written by seb.gauthier I've never been a fan of bug spray, I try to avoid chemicals in / on my body. Except for the ones I like. I've been hacked to pieces the last few times I've been fishing - it's never been this bad, before. I've got bites all over my legs, and the back of one calf looks like I've got a freakin' disease. I'm not going again without protection. What do you guys use? Are there any natural-type m
Fly Fishing History 1A In category Fly Fishing Written by Loach About 30 years ago they started having trophy trout fisheries in CA and in other places in the US. People had to pinch down the barbs on their flies to fish these barbless catch and release fisheries. Most all quality commercially tied flies where tied on Mustad hooks at this time. When the fly fishers crushed the barbs on the Mustad hooks, many of the entire points fell off. The fly fishers b
old fenwick rod In category Fly Fishing Written by kaylie I need some help from you fly fishers out there. I want to try to take up again fly fishing for trout. I have a rod I bought for the purpose when I was a kid. It's a cheap 30 year old Fenwick rod, made, I believe from glass fibre. It is 8 1/2 feet long and says AFTM 7 on it. I assume this means its "weight" is 7? My question is, would this be a reasonable rod to try fly fishing again after doing i
TR: Rapid river In category Fly Fishing Written by wjgray3 On Wednesday I made a stop at the Rapid River on my way to New York. Okay, it's not the most direct route to NewYork from Massachusetts by going through Maine but I wanted to see if the Alder flies were hatching. Leaving around 5:00pm on Tuesday got me to Bethel and my favorite spot on the Andy around eight. I was quite dismayed to find 4 cars at the parking spot but its a big river and I figure
Native Species/Natural Environment was Lake Ontario In category Fly Fishing Written by Swamp The preservation of native species is something that is important to me as is the preservation of natural environments. The definitions of what constitutes a native species and natural environments are basic foundations for preservation. I've given this quite a bit of thought and it seems to me that both definitions need to be based on the absence of man's influence. There seems to be a problem
"Here there be eagles" In category Fly Fishing Written by fakeneale The SO and I managed to wrangle a four day weekend so we're up at our house in Franconia, NH. Catching up with a robust 24.0K dialup through reading (I'm *so* spoiled by broadband modems!) Got the lawn mowed and then spent the day boating on the Conn. River above Moore Dam in Littleton. Rod Sock Sold Separately? In category Fly Fishing Written by janap I got my TFO 4pc 9' 8wt a few weeks ago and it came in a flimsy plastic tube (obviously NOT a rod tube) and without any sort of rod sock. The guy at my local fly shop ordered a Cortland aluminum tube for me and it is the perfect size. Now I need a rod sock. I am using an old pillowcase cut down and sewn by yours truly (no, I will not be startng a rod sock co. anytime soon). The pillowcase work

Moving beyond the "indicator, split shot and nymphs&quo In category Fly Fishing Written by Yodergd Hi U All, There is a time when you need to think about moving on. When you are always catching more fish than anyone else on the stream with your "indicator, split shot nymphs system" you might think about trying some real fly fishing? If I wanted to cast a bunch of "junk" all day, I would have stayed with spin fishing. This situation is not being helped by some (I said some, not all) of the f

2006 Southwest Miramichi River Report (NB, Canada) In category Fly Fishing Written by Casey Bentley The 2006 angling season is they say, “history” and now is the time for reflections of a healthy river, a superb angling season and to plan for 2007. 2006 – Strong runs of both large salmon and grilse started to appear in the main stem Southwest Miramichi River around mid-June. With good water conditions, runs remained strong until mid-July, then tapering off, as is the norm, picking up again w
