Gone and dunnit! In category Fly Fishing Written by JonSpike Yep, sure did...ordered my first ever custom 'boo rod from John Kenealy, and it only took me 4 months to make up my mind to spend that kind of money on a bluegill/bass rod. The rod will be finished in Feb. so now I can anticipate while the snow flies. I can still remember that sensual feeling of casting that little beauty at his casting pond, nothing like it. please help, need fly identified In category Fly Fishing Written by vatte I went to a local fly shop curious what to use to tie a size 16 mayfly with orange body and green wings. The guy said as far as he knew mayflies didnt have green wings. He also said the wings dont matter, that only the body matters af far as the fish are concerned. Obviously the fish cant see the top of a dry fly wing, but wouldnt they be concerned with the under part? The flyshop guy said tha

Small World In category Fly Fishing Written by Koaki We had a blood drive today at work. When I arrived I had a magazine to read and a photocopy of the same pages that I`ve mailed to Jeff M - the "Far West" section of the Montana guide book that I have. The lady that was taking blood from me saw the magazine and asked if I was a fly fisher. I said yes and she said that her parents own a flyshop in Montana. When I asked her "which one", she sa
Bend Over, USA In category Fly Fishing Written by Els So it comes out that Haliburton, Cheney's company, is charging the US public three times more to deliver a gallon of imported oil to Iraq than Iraq's homegrown oil company. Apparently, patriotism is for dying 18 yr olds in uniform while "business as usual" is for the well -connected for whom this is simpy another "opportunity" to soak the taxpayer.
Sierra TR - Probably too long In category Fly Fishing Written by buzz After a seemingly endless series of cancelled trips, I finally got the chance to spend some time fishing the eastern sierra waters around the town of Mammoth Lakes. This is an annual trip that a group of us takes to mark the end of summer, and the weather this year was absolutely gorgeous. I managed to get out of the condo late on the first afternoon and drove the few miles to one of my favorite
T In category Fly Fishing Written by PurpleClover I consider myself an intermediate fly fisherman. I can cast reasonably well and really enjoy the sport. My question deals with getting a more upscale rod. I have a couple of St. Croix's that I like a lot. This is for fishing for trout- a rod in the 4 , 5 or 6 weight. Would I be able to FEEL the difference if I got a Thomas and Thomas, a Winston, or an Orvis rod? Would it help me to improve my

Orvis Clearwater or Rocky Mountain reel? In category Fly Fishing Written by Printhead I posted here three weeks ago for advice on the subject of my old Fenwick #7 rod and taking up fly fishing. I have been doing some reading to get up to speed in the interim. Now I want to elicit opinions on a reel comparison and I figured this would be the place to ask Rocky Mountain? Also, I'd like

Small business in the USA.......... In category Fly Fishing Written by igouy I have had my own small business in California for about 30 years. In the US and particularly California, small businesses are threatened more now than ever. Many are closing down because they just can't make things profitable any more with constantly rising overheads like insurances, taxes and benefits. Even is a good economy things will be tough for small/medium size businesses. In the future i
rod abuse?? In category Fly Fishing Written by IMgizd I broke my 9 weight tfo on the feather today I caught a salmon, my line was all the way in, just the 10 feet of leader. I put my pull in the water so I could get a hold of the line to release the salmon, and he made a run and broke my pole just past the mid point Is it wrong to let your pole down to grab the line? Will temple fork consider this my fault? How does it rate as far as rod ab

Small FlyShop business challenges in USA In category Fly Fishing Written by allen Bill Kiene originally posted a thoughtful lament about small business problems in the US. I posted about an insidious, arrogant TV ad from the local bus agency bragging that they were charging $6 per $1000 receipts to pay for their rarely used bus services. My point was that no bus riders shopped at fly shops. Fly shops and other businesses often are forced to fund non relevant services. Business
Fly Fishing History 1A In category Fly Fishing Written by Loach About 30 years ago they started having trophy trout fisheries in CA and in other places in the US. People had to pinch down the barbs on their flies to fish these barbless catch and release fisheries. Most all quality commercially tied flies where tied on Mustad hooks at this time. When the fly fishers crushed the barbs on the Mustad hooks, many of the entire points fell off. The fly fishers b
Danl's TR: Rock Creek (long) In category Fly Fishing Written by soitgoes88 Another summer and another Western Clave. The weather at last year's clave at Henry's Fork was the coolest; this year's clave weather was definitely the hottest, at least the first several days. Nevertheless, all attendees made it through with only minor bouts of heat frustration. No doubt the early and often application of various potions and incense produced the desired calming effects so vital
Rod / Reel Recommendation for newbie In category Fly Fishing Written by oongowa I recently decided to get into fly-fishing (at the age of 30). I have fished all my life off and on and especially when I was younger growing up in Spokane WA and Hackcock County KY. After a recent trip to TN and fishing the Buffalo river for bass (using spinners), it hit me. I have totally lost touch with nature and those 2 days camping on the river made a deep impression on me. I moved to S
Moving beyond the "indicator, split shot and nymphs&quo In category Fly Fishing Written by Yodergd Hi U All, There is a time when you need to think about moving on. When you are always catching more fish than anyone else on the stream with your "indicator, split shot nymphs system" you might think about trying some real fly fishing? If I wanted to cast a bunch of "junk" all day, I would have stayed with spin fishing. This situation is not being helped by some (I said some, not all) of the f
