Cabela's FT fly rod In category Fly Fishing Written by Atterysquash I am looking for a 9 ft 4 wgt fly rod for occasional fishing here in the Colorado/Northern New Mexico/Northern Arizona area. At the Cabela's store their FT (code 904) sure felt great ...but many have said I really need to test with reel and line. I wonder if anyone out there might have some field experience with this particular rod?
first post In category Fly Fishing Written by ll TaMPuRa ll Hi, my name is Jeff and I have watched this group for a while without really posting. I have posted a few things recently but up the last 6 weeks I haven't really posted anything. WTF; I just wanna fish In category Fly Fishing Written by PChappell The local weather forecast in New England says it's going to be another shitty string of days, and there's not much light at the end of the tunnel. Although the temps are not too bad, the humidity is making outdoor life miserable. I went fishing last Saturday in this stuff, but I won't be doing *that* again soon - it absolutely sucked. trying <sigh>
Coast of Maine - Labor Day Week Report (long) In category Fly Fishing Written by BlackArrow Back in February, my wife booked a cottage in Maine for our Labor Day vacation. She said that the house was right on the water and I could fish every day. I fish almost exclusively for trout and the biggest outfit I had was a 5 wt. So I told her that I would need to "invest" in some heavier gear to the tune of about $500 for rod, reel, line, etc. She said, "So go ahead." (She has no problem s
New Fly Tying Space In category Fly Fishing Written by Large Sums of Money I've been tying recently in a crowded corner in my basement (finished at least) surrounded by piles of junk. To say I was gettign claustrophobic is an understatement. I was also constantly losing stuff and finding it behind boxes, or well, you know the drill. Well, I finally have a new dedicated room for my fly tying!!! I am so excited I can't contain myself... be right back. OK, feel better
Short TR: you know the stream In category Fly Fishing Written by SeanE I was supposed to meet up with Uncle Wally today--tentatively--but I couldn't reach him on his wedding anniversary, Go figure? Anyway, I made my way out the door this morn around 8ish AM. It was over-cast and rainy lookin', but I seldom check the weather channels before headin' out to fish--don't want to get discouraged before I even get started, if ya know what I mean. I had brought along my t
Small business in the USA.......... In category Fly Fishing Written by igouy I have had my own small business in California for about 30 years. In the US and particularly California, small businesses are threatened more now than ever. Many are closing down because they just can't make things profitable any more with constantly rising overheads like insurances, taxes and benefits. Even is a good economy things will be tough for small/medium size businesses. In the future i
TR: San Juan In category Fly Fishing Written by n00b_e This past weekend I doubled my fishing days for the year by spending 3 days on the San Juan. A friend of mine from church had asked me to go with him, his 8 year old son, and a friend of his from Tennessee. Once I knew I was out of commission for the December SJ clave, I couldn't say no! Bright sunny days didn't make the fishing easy, and being for the most part late to the river in the morning a
East Lake, OR In category Fly Fishing Written by justdaemon For the sixth consecutive year, Hermaidenname and I are going to vacation in Central OR, relaxing at the ranch of a friend between Prineville and Bend. I usually get to fish three or four of the days for varying periods of time and have spent most of this time plunking around on the Crooked and Metolius and the Deschutes at Mecca Flats. The trip is set for the middle of September. This year, I'd

More Anti Movies from Disney In category Fly Fishing Written by hlauj Disney's Anti-Hunting Bias is UnBEARable- (11/26) Disney's most recent animated feature, "Brother Bear," is following in the anti-hunting footsteps of "Bambi" as it hits theatres in time for the holidays - and hunting seasons. Moving beyond the "indicator, split shot and nymphs&quo In category Fly Fishing Written by Yodergd Hi U All, There is a time when you need to think about moving on. When you are always catching more fish than anyone else on the stream with your "indicator, split shot nymphs system" you might think about trying some real fly fishing? If I wanted to cast a bunch of "junk" all day, I would have stayed with spin fishing. This situation is not being helped by some (I said some, not all) of the f
Mosquito Lagoon In category Fly Fishing Written by captainneal  The fishing in th Mosquito Lagoon is still good. On one trip with three people this week we caught 9 redfish on one trip and three were oversized (over 27 inches), they also landed 16 keeper trout and one was five pounds. Have you ever noticed when you're out fishing and everything is quiet, your hook is baited and your line is out; you're watching your line for small movements for what
Mosquito Lagoon Florida Report 12/15/06 In category Fly Fishing Written by Capt Chris M Poor weather has limited my fishing the past two weeks but when I have been able to get on the water, the fishing has been excellent. The water has continued to drop in the Mosquito Lagoon but has been very clean. Last week, Mark L. from Massachusetts, joined me for a half day of fly fishing the Mosquito Lagoon. The weather was near perfect with the exception of a few clouds. Temperatures were
Mosquito Lagoon Florida Report 1/10/07 In category Fly Fishing Written by Capt Chris M Fishing in the Mosquito Lagoon the past several weeks has seemed more like fall or spring than late December and early January. High water levels combined with above normal temperatures have the fish confused. Many of the redfish are still schooled up, however, but it can sometimes take a bit of searching to find them. The big seatrout that can be found in the shallow sand holes during a normal wi

Mosquito Lagoon Florida Report 1/16/07 In category Fly Fishing Written by Capt Chris M The water levels have dropped in the Mosquito Lagoon but the temperatures have remained well above normal with several days in the 80's. The redfish schools have been plentiful and the black drum have been showing up on occasion. It has been more like fishing in April than January but I never complain when I can fish in shorts during the winter. Last Friday, Paul H. from Orlando, and I hit the
Mosquito Lagoon Florida Report 1/26/07 In category Fly Fishing Written by Capt Chris M It seems as if winter may have finally arrived here in Central Florida. With temperatures forecast to be in the 60's during the day and 40's at night, we can expect a significant drop in the water temperature. This may bring the big trout, which have been scattered so far this year, onto the shallow flats. A trophy sized seatrout is an extremely wary fish when on the flats. They will not tol

Mosquito Lagoon Florida Report 2/9/07 In category Fly Fishing Written by Capt Chris M The past two weeks have brought some cold north winds to east central Florida dropping both the water temperature and level. The extreme low water has many of the areas we had been fishing high and dry, Water temps are hovering in the mid 50's and the wind has been a factor on several recent trips. Despite the conditions, the fish has been quite good. Last week, Capt Tom Van Horn and I fished
South Indian River Fishing Report In category Fishing Adventures Written by fishtales February 15, 2007 Inshore: It was one of those weeks where one day the fish are biting and the next you are scratching your head. The last part of this week provided warmer water and the fish reacted to it. Guess it won't last too long with this next cold front bearing down on us from the frozen north. Dress warm if you are heading out this weekend! The trout bite was good over the we
Mosquito Lagoon Florida Report 2/19/07 In category Fly Fishing Written by Capt Chris M This week ended with some of the coldest weather we have experienced so far this year and before the cold came some of the highest winds of the year. The weather made for some tough fishing conditions but we did catch a few quality fish and did not get shut out during four days of fishing. Monday brought mild temperatures but we faced clouds and rain as I fished with Bob Caruso from Connecticut
Mosquito Lagoon Florida Report 2/24/07 In category Fly Fishing Written by Capt Chris M This week was the complete opposite of last with mild temperatures, sunny skies and, for the most part, reasonable winds. The fishing was great and the catching was even better. Tuesday, Tom from Massachusetts and I started on a slick calm morning by stalking a school of big redfish in crystal clear water. We fished them for a couple hours with only a couple bites but, with persistence, Tom was
Mosquito Lagoon Florida Report 3/5/07 In category Fly Fishing Written by Capt Chris M Schools of redfish continue to roam the shallow flats of Mosquito Lagoon. In addition to schools of 20-200 fish, there are plenty of single reds to be found in the same areas. The water level has risen in the past few days and water temperatures are pushing 70 degrees. The fish are active and targeting small crabs and shrimp. If you can get a small soft plastic in front of them, they will eat it.
Fishing Report tampa bay 3-10-07 In category General Discussions Written by Danny Guarino With weather like this how can you go wrong? Even with a very slow bite we managed to land 5 slot size snook this past week. My trips started out at the crack of dawn in search of bait. The bait at the mouth of the little Manatee River is all but gone. On Thursday I spent about 1 ½ hour throwing my net just getting enough bait for the day. Looks like we will be headed to the Skyway until the bait

Windy South Indian River Fishing Report In category Fishing Adventures Written by fishtales March 22, 2007 Inshore: We all know that March is always a windy month around here on the Treasure Coast, and yet, we will continually complain about it....year after year! Looks like the winds will continu
Mosquito Lagoon Florida Report 3/25/07 In category Fly Fishing Written by Capt Chris M During the past two weeks, high winds have made for some tough fishing in east central Florida. A cold front last weekend dropped the temperatures into the 40's but over the past week, they have climbed steadily reaching the 80's this weekend. The rising temperatures have brought even more bait fish to the flats and clear skies the past few days offered some great sight fishing opportunities.
Mosquito Lagoon Florida Report 4/7/07 In category Fly Fishing Written by Capt Chris M The weather the past couple weeks has been up and down with some high winds and some days of no wind. The fishing, like the weather, has been up and down with some great days, and some not so perfect days. The redfish, however are still schooled up and plentiful, The big seatrout have returned to the flats and are beginning to eat. The key to fishing has been to find the schools of mullet. They ha
Mosquito Lagoon Florida Report 4/15/07 In category Fly Fishing Written by Capt Chris M We have continued to experience outstanding fishing for redfish and large seatrout during the past few weeks. On most days, we have encountered multiple schools of redfish along with a significant amount of singles tailing on the flats of Mosquito Lagoon. Seeing redfish does not always equate with catching them, as those who have fished the Lagoon know. Although the fish have been plentiful, and,
Mosquito Lagoon Florida Report 4/29/07 In category Fly Fishing Written by Capt Chris M We have been seeing hundreds of redfish on most trips during the past few weeks. The catching, however, has varied. High winds on many trips have made sight casting to these spooky fish difficult. If you can manage to get a lure in front of the fish, they have been eating well. The shallow flats are still holding plenty of schooling fish and there have been plenty of shots at tailing fish througho
Mosquito Lagoon Florida Report 6/8/07 In category Fly Fishing Written by Capt Chris M Summer finally arrived this week in east central Florida. For the first time in nearly three weeks, we have had calm winds and warm temperatures. Hopefully, this weather pattern is here to stay.
