Question On Leaders In category Fly Fishing Written by darren ward Hi all, hopefully someone can advise me what leaders(and brands) to use in various situations. I have been using tapered (Frog Hair and fulling mill knotless)leaders for small dry flies(size 16 and smaller) but find they(the leaders)have a tendency to curl up and mess up presentation and end up only feet from the flyline despite the leaders being at least 9ft.I havn't tried to make my own ones usi
Waterproof, clear top, multiple use fly box??? In category Fly Fishing Written by Runefall I have brought this subject up before, but I am now ready to replace some aging fly boxes and I was curious as to your experiences/knowledge/latest offerings in fly boxes. What I want is a clear top, waterproof, multiple use box (some foam, compartments, magnetic area (perhaps) etc.), and with lanyard capable. I am imaging a box that I could take with dry flies, midges, streamers and nymphs – f
cdc caddis In category Fly Fishing Written by vatte I remember buying a cdc caddis sometime up in the sierra, and it was just a small size 20 hook with cdc, no hackle or elk hair. I noticed when I wet it looked just like a caddis. How well would this fly work? Just grey cdc, no hackle, no dubbed body hair, no ellk hair? How would it work with grey cdc as dubbing for a grey caddis?

N. San Juan last Tuesday In category Fly Fishing Written by AllYourBass Last Tuesday was a government holiday in the US (Veteran's Day). Your faithful government servant took the opportunity to check out the low flow situation at the San Juan, in preparation for the upcoming clave. The flow rate was low - ~250cfs. It's expected to stay at that low level through April. The weather was supposed to be terrible (rain, cold, snow). It wasn't. Everyone told us the fis

upper sac dry fly fishing In category Fly Fishing Written by vatte How is the dry fly fishing on the upper sac? I get the impression most people nymph it. I am thinking of heading up the 2 hours to Redding to dry fly fish. Where should I go, Redding or dunsmuir or ??. Also what flys should I bring? I usually use a 16 elk hair caddis and a 16 blue wing olive at Butte meadows. WIll these be sufficient?
bizarre occurence In category Fly Fishing Written by ScareCrow13 It happened about 2 hours ago. I was nymphing right near town. On the second cast I hooked a fish, which immediately jumped and I saw it was a typical 10" stocker (presumably) I'd expect to find in this spot. I started bulling it into my net with my 5x tippet when the fish started pulling like a submarine. It took line relentlessly and wouldn't show itself on the surface. I must have fought it for
Tying power bait In category Fly Fishing Written by Fenris I'm getting ready for the annual trip w/ FB up to the Salmon River in a couple weeks, and part of that preparation for me is the traditional tying-more-flies-than-any-ten-humans could use ritual. One year, it was little estaz eggs. Tied up a hundred or two, only to find out on the river that they were so last year. Then there was the year of the Altmar Sunrise. That one worked great, and I
The Ordeal In category Fly Fishing Written by freeguyute Subtitle: "We may not know where we are, or what we're doing, but at least we're still alive!" Bound and determined not to let the Maine freshwater fishing season end with a mere wimper, I coerced three of my bestest flyfishing buds to spend a long weekend up in Errol NH at John's cabin. The plan was to hit the Rapid a couple of times before the weekend crowds arrived, fish the Androscoggin River
Fly shop in Thailand (long0 In category Fly Fishing Written by cdrsnob "Bonnie and I had dinner over at the Borgers last night. I haven't seen Gary all summer and it was good to catch up with Gary and his wife, Nancy. Gary has been consulting in Thailand for Targus. He has been there for 9 weeks reorganizing the company. NC CLave In category Fly Fishing Written by stone Since wiser heads have prevailed and suggested I stick with the 7.5 4wt. for the NC Clave those monies can be spent on stocking my fly box. I realize it's a bit in the future and to really nail it, a crystal ball would be needed. I'll not hold anyone accountable for their recommendations about fly patterns. (Gracious ain't I). Some suggestions would be most appreciated. Bill In Va.
Montana Clave suggested equipment??? In category Fly Fishing Written by Runefall I am starting up my list (Christmas is coming) for the Western Clave and I was wondering what is suggested for things like? 1) Fly rods 2) Secret Leader formulas sizes etc. 3) Flies 4) Fly lines 5) Wading shoe soles (I have felt, do we need studs too?) 6) Any other suggestions of equipment
dry fly and dropper question In category Fly Fishing Written by vatte So I use a indicator on my line (floating line of my fly reel) where the line meets tapper leader (4.7 pounds), dry fly at end of tapper, 2 to 3 feet of 4 pound leader with a split shot or two in middle, and then a nymph at the end. My question is my dry fly always disapears, do I have to catch fish by setting the hook by site or can I just use the visual from the indicator? All the fish I have

Cleaning Fish Streamside In category Fly Fishing Written by ray In the 'How to Kill a Trout" thread, AW mentioned cleaning a fish steamside. However, I recently heard from a reputable source that you should never clean a fish in the same water it lived in unless you intended to eat in almost immediately. This is because the fish has developed in its skin certain resistances to specific bacteria, etc, from its home stream, but if you open it up and wash it out,
Help with nymph fishing In category Fly Fishing Written by 223623687 I went fishing today, with a 8 weight and a 2 split shots, 1 between each of the flies. I can cast dry flies, I had a horrible time casting the line with 2 split shots. What is it, do I need to do a different type of cast for a split shot than a dry fly?

Tippet Material Questions In category Fly Fishing Written by rfulkerson I'm curious to know what tippet materials you've tried and have possibly compared others to. I've been using the Orvis stuff for years and have been completely satisfied. This past year, I switched to the new Orvis Material, and I think it's great, but there's gotta be better. Speaking with a guide recently, he mentioned he only usies the Mirage Chamelion. Al Caucci I believe usies Rio and I t
Moving beyond the "indicator, split shot and nymphs&quo In category Fly Fishing Written by Yodergd Hi U All, There is a time when you need to think about moving on. When you are always catching more fish than anyone else on the stream with your "indicator, split shot nymphs system" you might think about trying some real fly fishing? If I wanted to cast a bunch of "junk" all day, I would have stayed with spin fishing. This situation is not being helped by some (I said some, not all) of the f
Moving beyond the "indicator, split shot and nymphs" syndrome. In category Fly Fishing Written by milhouse Hi U All, There is a time when you need to vicariously think about functionally moving on. When you`re always negatively catching more fish then aynone else on the straem with your "indicator, split shot nymphs system" you may think about scientifically trying some really fly fishing? To that degree if I wantyed to aptly cast a bunch of "junk" all day, I would conveniently have stayed with

fishing flies for a survival kit In category Fly Fishing Written by TheXRealXSlimXShadey I will start out by stating that I am not a fly fisher. I do teach resident physicians and Boy Scout groups about wilderness medicine and survival training. Two recommendations that I have come accross we
