Fishing - the basics

Fishing is not expensive. For a couple of hundred euros you can buy some nice equipment. You will have a fishing rod, line, and lead fishing weights, a few floats and a scoop net. A little lure and we can start fishing.

Prepare your line

The fishing gear consists out of line. On one end we make a loop. With this loop tie the line to the top of the fishing rod. Push the float over the line. Then tie the hook to the line. That is done with a special knot. Put the line on the hook with your index finger. Fold the line. Tie the loose 5 times around the line and the hook. The line goes through the left over loop. Wet the line with a bit of saliva and pull the knot. The hook should hang straight now. In the water squeeze the lead fishing weight on the line. A little ball needs to be attached about 15 centimeters from the hook. About 20 centimeters from the first ball you need to attach yet bigger pieces of lead fishing weight. With a lead we measure how deep the water is. We push the float at the right height. Only the top of the float should allowed to be above the water. This way the hook will be lying on the bottom or just above it. You are now ready to start fishing.

Lure and food

The lure should lure the fish in. You can use a variety of things as lure. Fish eat bread, maggots, casters, worms, hemp seed and corn. Attach the lure goes onto the hook. Cast the line in the water. Now, start feeding. Fish food is sold ready made. If you mix it with breadcrumbs, it will fall apart slowly in the water. You 'feed' through the float. Don't throw too much food in the water. If you do so, it will stay at the bottom and turn sour and your chosen spot will not attract fish anymore.

Bite

You don't have to wait long. The float goes under with a short pull. You respond with a short pull on the fishing rod and then you tie the hook. The fish wants to escape, so gently pull the fishing rod the other way. Careful! The line shouldn't break. This pulling for side-to-side gets the fish tired. When the fish is calm, you don’t have to take him out of the water to release the hook. Take the fish and gently take the hook out of its mouth. You have caught your first fish! Congratulations!

A spinning rod

The line is the simplest way to fish. But still one needs to gain experience to fish this way with success. A different way of fishing is with the spinning rod. On the fishing rod you will find a mill and it that the line. The line goes through eyes on the rod. This gives the fisher leverage; you can catch bigger fish with it. A big fish will break the line of a steady rod. With the spinning rod you can "give more line' when the fish pulls and thus prevent the fish from breaking the line until it is calm enough to hall it in.

Predatory fish

The spinning rod is also the best for predatory fish. These fish is tempted with fake lure. This is made of wood, metal or plastic. The lure looks like a little fish. With fake lure you cast the line in the water and real it back in – this imitates movement and makes the lure more real to your pray... Repeat this often, this way you search the water. You will find predatory fish especially close to bridges, landing stages and places with loose stones. Here, it is not about waiting until they bite, you need to keep your rod moving and cover the whole area around your spot. This is hard work, but it pays of. Because predatory fish tastes the best.
